Matthew R. Schultz is a native of the Washington, D.C. area (specifically, Silver Spring, Maryland). He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1997, where he majored in political science and philosophy, and spent most of his time either playing Rugby (poorly) or competing nationally on the University of Maryland Mock Trial team (not so poorly--Maryland won the United States National Championship in 1995 and regional titles in 1996 and 1997).

In 2000, Matt received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), earning Order of the Coif honors and graduating as one of the top ten students of his class.

Following law school, Matt entered a one-year clerkship for the Honorable Maxine M. Chesney in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, where he worked on numerous cases in nearly every area of the law.

After his clerkship, Matt joined the law firm of Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk and Rabkin as an associate. There, he worked on a wide range of practice areas, including civil rights First Amendment litigation defending Hastings Law School from a suit by the Christian Legal Society, appellate litigation in federal and state court on a wide range of issues, private mediation of contractual and domain name disputes, and complex commercial litigation in federal and state courts involving antitrust, copyright, trademark, trade secret, and consumer protection class actions.

In 2005, Matt joined the law firm of Zelle, Hofmann, Voelbel, Mason & Gette, and was invited to became a partner in 2007. There, Matt worked on behalf of nationwide classes of plaintiffs in antitrust and consumer protection class action in federal and state courts throughout the country.

In 2009, Matt joined the law firm of Straus & Boies LLP, located in Arlington, Virginia as Senior Counsel, but returned to the Bay Area shortly thereafter to work as Senior Counsel at Gonzalez & Leigh.

Matt also periodically takes leaves of absences to work with his father, who is an experienced trial attorney in Washington, D.C., on numerous trials representing seriously injured patients in medical malpractice cases. Matt has a wide range of experience in trial, appellate, and private mediation, and his primary focus remains commercial and civil rights litigation at Gonzalez & Leigh.
